ok so this will be my first sailboat build : http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=SailBoats/BlueMoon
and so i am here to ask what cheaper alternative materials could be used aside from marine plywood. the article says you can build for 500 dollars but this was back in the 70's. now just the marine plywood would be roughly 936 dollars. i would like to keep this 1000 dollars or less so what would you suggest?
note this will be used in saltwater a fair amout and i would like to kepp it for as long as possible.

Need plans for a double decker trailer to haul car & boat at same time, behind mtr home tks?

checkout custom made double decker trailers on wiki,.

Displacement question regarding boat building project.?

My friend and I are planning to build a wood flat-bottom lake-type canoe. I have figured out dimensions but I can't find an equation for Water displacement vs. maximum weight. I am trying to figure out the relationship between the submerged hull and the weight within the boat. If you have an equation I can do the math. Equation should include Surface Area of the hull (or length x width or something to that effect), weight inside boat, and depth the boat will sit in the water for the given weight and area. Although I can do the math, here's the dimensions in case you want to play around with them. The Bottom flat panel is 96″x24″ and at each end it has a triangle piece with a SA of 288 sq inch. Since these pieces taper upward to a point at 45 degrees, the net downward forced is reduced by half, so the total SA of the boat is 2(.5 *288) +2304=2592 in sq. Using an equation which I believe is incorrect I got 1131 lbs as a max capacity weight with 24″ tall sides. Any help appreciated.

I'm 14, I want to build a small boat got any good boat plans?

Hey like I said I'm 14, so don't suggest anything massive please. Maybe 7 feet long at most. Also, I do have basic power tools and hand tools, so don't suggest anything that requires expensive, fancy, un-ordinary tools. It needs to be relatively easy to build and light weight. Preferably made out of wood because I really don't have the stuff to make a skin on frame boat… I'm looking for a boat that will hold 2-3 people… Please no model boats. Got any plans for a small boat? I would be grateful for your help!

P.S. the plans need to be pretty basic too…

Expoy Question (2 part/marine) Wood Jon boat – only expoying the seams?

I build a wooden jon boat. The boat is 7 feet long, by 2 feet wide. The sides are 13 inches. If I just expoy the seams and then paint, will it float? I used 3/4 inch pine wood to build it, and used waterproof glue and brass screw to fasten it together. I was told this would be fine, because it will not be in the water all the time. I was planning on just using exterior house paint as by primer coat, and then cover that with a floor paint designed for bathroom use. I was told this would be fine, based the fact that it wouldn't be in the water all the time. Is this a good plan or was I mislead? I'm asking because some people say to expoy the whole boat. I want to use 3 to 4 hours, every other weekend. I only need the boat to hold up for one summer.

Can i use a briggs&straton lawnmower motor on a homemade boat as an inboard/outboard motor?

the boat is a boat i found online it is a plywood rowboat that can handle a 3 to 5 horsepower outboard but they are too expensive when i could go to the hardware stora and buy a motor for 100 or 200 $ and do a little work to make an even better boat. i would also like to add a console (with steering and maybe just maybe a throttle) if its possible. the url for the plans is: http://www.vintageprojects.com/boats/plywood-row.html ……. so can anyone tell me what i might have to do or have any ideas? im very new to this concept and just thought it might be a fun thing to try out…. also if its inboard how would that work, would i have to drill holes into the bottom, that would make me nervous i wouldnt want to sink or even worse jeapordize the work and money id been putting in the project

How can I build a pirate ship?

I want to build a small pirate ship, but I don't have a yard (I live in a condo), and I don't have tons of money, or a lot of wood. Yet, I get so excited over owning a real ship! I'm still a teen, so I don't have a well paying job or anything.
I want it to be powered by sail, wooden, with a place below decks to sleep (in hammocks) and store cargo, about 25 feet long I think, and very sea worthy!!!
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I'm 14, I want to build a small boat. Got any good boat plans for me?

Hey like I said I'm 14, so don't suggest anything massive please. Maybe 7 feet long at most. Also, I do have basic power tools and hand tools, so don't suggest anything that requires expensive, fancy, un-ordinary tools. It needs to be relatively easy to build and light weight. Preferably made out of wood because I really don't have the stuff to make a skin on frame boat… I'm looking for a boat that will hold 2-3 people… Please no model boats. Got any plans for a small boat? I would be grateful for your help!

P.S. the plans need to be pretty basic too…

Are you looking to construct a watercraft and cannot decide on where to start. You might wish to begin by locating a set of boat plans, drawings or patterns. This will enable you to get on the first step towards creating that boat you’ve always longed for.

If looking to build a fishing boat, house boat, sail boat, or even a tug boat there are a variety of boat design companies that offered detailed plans, kits and supplies. And most of these plans are designed specifically for the amateur or novice builder in mind.

If you’ve seen a vessel that’s idea for your boating activities – but appears to be way outside your budget at the present time. That’s not going to be the case if your able to locate a set of boat plans to construct a similar type or model of craft to that of the manufactured version. Its often seen that savings in the region of 35 – 50% or more are to be gained when compared to the expense of a commercially built vessel. And provided the plans are followed and the craft is water-tight – its going to do the same thing once its on the water.

Aluminum, fiberglass, steel, and stitch and glue are the popular choices when it comes to boat building construction methods. The stitch and glue method is suitable for just about anyone, with plywood often seen as a nicer and easier material to work with. For those with carpentry skills, plywood is likely to be the material of choice. And with aluminum or Steel it helps to have knowledge in welding skills.

Building a custom-built craft requires a good set of boat plans. So, take the time to seek out plans that are user-friendly and meet your specific needs.

Alot of people would like to be able to build their own wooden boats but the problem is that most people follow the wrong wooden boat plans or they don;t have enough time or they are worried because they don’t have any experience crafting things etc… We are gonna address some of those issues here, read on.

The number 1 problem in DIY boat building is the lack of some proper boat building plans, by not picking the right plans you might find yourself hitting a wall because most of the plans out there do not offer detailed step by step instructions or they don’t have a detailed list of what materials and tools to use. This is something that you want to check before you buy any.

Another problem in DIY boat building is the lack of time. Most of us have jobs and families and can’t possibly spend alot of time building our boat, and this is where having the proper step by step detailed plans comes handy, because it cuts your building time by 50% or more, seriously…it does.

I bet that you are also worried about not actually being able to build one because you’re not some master in crafting or working with tools, right? This, again, is very easily fixed by having the proper boat building plans. The good ones will actually show your or come with a small book or flyer of some sort that will actually show you what tools you need and when to use them in the process of building your own wooden boat.

As you can see, everything comes together in 1 spot, the wooden boat plans. Have the right ones and you can build your boat amazingly fast, easy and without having to worry that once you put it in the water you will say hello to the fishes.

So if you want to build your own wooden boat fast and easy and without having the wife screaming at you that you spend too much time in that garage, you can find my review of some wooden boat plans that include all of the above, they are truly the best, honestly.

How to build a homemade plywood boat plans?

i am wanting some FREE plywood boat plans online please help me out!!!!!!!

1f81

There are many things that go into a well designed boat specifically designed for rowing. It has to have the specification that makes it effective and easy to maneuver for rowing. And that is specially the design that goes into a very good row boat plans for those who wish to build their very own row boat.

Row boat are powered by oars which have a mechanical connection to the boat which makes it distinctly different from paddle boats.

There are some factors, often competing ones that should be taken on a balance to build an efficient and well-designed row boat. Some of the imperatives that has to be taken into consideration in a row boat plans are:

WATERLINE BEAM

There has to be a balance on the waterline beam or simply the width of the boat. If the width is too narrow, it will leave the occupant the risk of falling out and if it is too high, the boat will be caught in the waves and will make the speed of the boat considerably slower.

FREEBOARD

Freeboard is the height above the waterline. This should be kept a a very good height in proportion to the overall size of the boat because if the freeboard is too high then there’s a good possibility that it will be very difficult for the rower to take full control of the boat during high winds. On the other hand,if it is too low, water will enter the boat even with just moderate waves.

LENGTH AND WIDTH RATIO

Longer boats are easier to row and can hold a course very well while a wider boat adds stability to the structure. Therefore it is imperative that you settle on a very good and efficient ratio for a rowboat. Most row boat plans follow a 1:4 width-length ratio.

Overall, the rowboat should be designed that makes it efficient for rowing. And these are but some of the factors that merits some consideration in a good rowing boat plans.

Personally, I’ve worked with row boat plan when I was building a rowing boat. The thing with building your own boat is that it can be most rewarding and way cheaper than buying a boat. But to get the most out of the experience, you have to have a very good plan in the first place.

Here’s the boat plans which I found most helpful in this aspect. You might want to check it out:

Sometimes people who enjoy carpentry as well as fishing get an idea in their head that they want to build a wooden boat. These types of plans are generally pretty basic, and you can easily locate a great set of suitable boat plans online with a few simple searches.

There are; however, certain criteria of good boat outlines online. These are:

1.	Many plans to choose from;

2.	Plans that are designed by someone who has built boats and knows what they are talking about;

3.	Inexpensive plans, and a one time fee;

4.	A helpful forum;

5.	Detailed step by step instructions;

6.	Videos to back up the plans and instructions;

7.	Support, if needed;

8.	A reasonable money back guarantee (usually 60 days)

On the other hand, there are certain things you should avoid with boat plans online:

1.	Free plans – because they have no support, back up, details, videos, etc.;

2.	Plans that are designed by someone who has zero experience with building boats;

3.	Sites that do not offer any instructions.

You might think it is expensive to purchase boat plans online; however, if you can locate a very good resource, you will know exactly how to source inexpensive materials and save money in the long run. In addition to that, you will waste money if plans are not clear or properly designed. Boat plans that are online can be downloaded right away and you can get started on planning your project soon after your download.

How do you loft boat plans?

I have a set of kayak plans but they are not full size.

I'm told I have to “loft” them bit I have no idea how to do that.

Can anyone explain this in a way that I can understand it?

There is a lot to think about before beginners should start searching online for wooden boat plans to use with their first boat building project. The time and space needed to build your own boat goes beyond what a typical DIY home woodworking project needs. You must choose a method of construction that best suits your experience, so it will be important to do some reading on several boat building methods.

The easiest and most common method for inexperienced boat builders is the stitch and glue method. There are several good reasons for choosing stitch and glue boat building over some other techniques. No complex woodworking skills are needed and you use basic tools you already own. A huge factor is that the materials needed are easily found at your local lumber yard. Provided you have a quality, easy to follow set of wooden boat plans, and depending on the size of your boat, this simple boat building technique can usually be completed in just one weekend!

Most other boat building techniques first involve building a frame, and then use a variety of different methods for attaching wooden planks to the frame. The stitch and glue method works well for beginners because it does not require building a frame first, nor does it require any special tools. The only materials that will be needed are a set of wooden boat plans, plywood, epoxy, copper wire a fiberglass sheath and paint. In addition to being a very easy procedure, it has the reputation of creating boats that are lighter, stronger and faster than many other types of boats

This stitch and glue boat building project works by taking the plywood planks that have been cut to the specifications found in your wooden boat plans, and then connect or “stitch” two panels together with copper wire to gradually form the boat. Epoxy “glue” is used to seal the seams. When the glue is dry, the wire is either cut out, or the ends snipped off. Easy to follow directions teach you how to add a finishing layer of protection and strength with an epoxy soaked fiberglass sheath. Finish it off with several coats of varnish or paint.

To fully experience the joy and satisfaction of building a wooden boat from beginning to end, it really is best to buy a quality set of wooden boat plans, and gather all the materials yourself. This is much cheaper than boat building kits, and most importantly, lets you become actively involved in the whole process each and every step of the way. When you proudly launch your finished boat, you will realize that you personally created everything you see or touch. Just think how much fun you will have telling people that all you had to do is stitch and glue to build your boat!
